LSU (2-0) vs. Auburn (2-0) Game Preview

These two have played a few killers over the last several years.

After a few blowouts, the last two showdowns have turned into program-changing moments, The epic flickering play-clock game of 2016 turned into the end of the Les Miles era – or lead to it – and really, really helped Gus Malzahn’s world, and then last year the Geaux Tigers got their revenge in a thrilling 27-24 win.

Auburn still got to the SEC Championship despite the loss, so this isn’t quite an elimination game in the West race, but realistically … it’s an elimination game in the West race.

With trips to Mississippi State, Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama still to go, Auburn’s SEC world is in big, big trouble if it can’t take care of this at home. LSU has to go to Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M, but this is it. This is the biggest road game left with Alabama and Georgia coming to Baton Rouge.

It also might be a game for – at least – a New Year’s Six bowl, with LSU doing a great job in the opener against Miami, and with Auburn slipping past Washington early on.

One Reason Why LSU Will Win

Defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has the defensive line and the pass rush dialed in.

The Tigers were able to bother Malik Rosier all game long in the win over Miami – generating four sacks on the day – and came up with five more sacks against Alabama State. The Auburn offensive line has been terrific so far – holding its own against Washington in the opener – but it’s about to be under attack.

Auburn is also having a big problem in the red zone. Last in the SEC after just two games, the Tigers have only converted on 75% of their tries inside the 20. LSU? Tied for No. 1 in the nation scoring on all eight possessions so far.

One Reason Why Auburn Will Win

Joe Burrow hasn’t been all that great.

The former Ohio State quarterback was praised for not wetting the bed against the Miami defense in the opener, and he has yet to throw a pick, but he’s only hitting 47% of his passes and didn’t quite click like he should’ve against SE Louisiana. That’s part of the reason why LSU is so bad on third downs.

Again, it’s a small sample size, but LSU is only connecting on 26% of its third down tries. On the other side, Auburn’s defense has been fantastic on the money downs, stopping Washington time and again, and having no problems against Alabama State.
