Miami vs Toledo

Miami vs Toledo : Reigning Mid-American Conference champions, the Toledo Rockets, don’t appear to be much different from the 2017 version UM fans watched last year — at least on paper. The Hurricanes ultimately pulled out a 52-30 win over a resilient Rockets squad. With Miami well aware of Toledo’s offensive capabilities, the rematch could pose the ultimate game of chess between Toledo’s HC Jason Candle and Miami’s HC Mark Richt. Will those Rockets continue to be a thorn in the side of the Canes or does UM have a better idea of Candle’s modus operandi

Miami (1-1) vs. Toledo (1-0) Game Preview

One Reason Why Miami Will Win

The defense hasn’t been a problem.

The offense might have blown up on Savannah State, but all offenses blow up on Savannah State. It sputtered against LSU, and after the way last year ended, it still has to prove itself.

The defense, though, has continued to be a killer.

Lost in the loss to LSU was how the D held the Tiger ground game in check, and for all of the love given to QB Joe Burrow, he only completed 46% of his throws for 140 yards.

The defense has the pass rush, it continues to have the elite ability to get into the backfield, and it continues its swarming ways under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.

One Reason Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo had a scrimmage against VMI, and then it got two weeks to prepare for the Hurricanes. The team should be ready, and the passing game is more than ready to go.

The Rockets have the receivers. Diontae Johnson and Cody Thompson are as good as any twosome the Hurricanes will face all year, and Jon’Vea Johnson cranked up three catches for 80 yards and a score in the opener.

Can Mitchell Guadagni handle the pressure from the Canes? If he gets time to work, the big plays and the deep throws will be there.

And then there’s the question about the Hurricane offense and if it can keep up. Malik Rosier only completed 15-of-35 throws against LSU, and while this is a step down in competition, he and the Miami attack has to prove once again it can explode against a decent opponent.

Betting line: Penn State is a 35-point favorite

Rankings: Penn State No. 12 in Associated Press poll; No. 10 in Amway Coaches poll

More importantly, Oh has had a keen eye for the tendencies of the Nittany Lions — he’s 7-1 picking their games against the spread the past two years. Now, he has analyzed Saturday’s showdown at Happy Valley and released a confident point-spread selection, which he is only sharing over at SportsLine.

Oh has taken into account the fact that Penn State has won 39 of its past 42 games hosting non-conference opponents.

The Lions’ defense made a huge turnaround last year. After allowing 25.4 points per game in 2016, a senior-laden unit gave up only 16.5 in 2017. Now only three starters are back from that team. While the players come from heralded recruiting classes of coach James Franklin the past three years, inexperience showed in a season-opening 45-38 squeaker over Appalachian State. But the Lions learned from their issues in Week 1 and shut down Pittsburgh 51-6 last Saturday, allowing just 291 total yards.

The offensive turnaround of Penn State the past four years has been striking. The team averaged 20.6 points in 2014, but last year, led by Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley, Penn State averaged a whopping 41.1. Barkley is gone but McSorley is back, as are four O-line starters. McSorley has thrown for 375 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in two games and junior running back Miles Sanders has done his part, rushing for 209 yards on 35 carries.

But just because Penn State has a prolific offense doesn’t mean it will cover a nearly five-touchdown spread.

These two teams have faced off twice in the past five years, and both went Penn State’s favor, 34-0 in 2013 and 33-13 in 2016. A similar score Saturday and the Flashes cover. Kent State returns 13 starters from last year and opened the season with a 31-24 loss at Illinois before cruising past Howard 54-14.

Quarterback Woody Barrett, a former Auburn recruit, proved he can compete against Big Ten competition in his first game for the Flashes. Against Illinois, he went 28 of 41 for 270 yards and two touchdowns and ran 18 times for 117 yards and a score. Penn State had issues against Appalachian State dual-threat quarterback Zac Thomas.

Oklahoma (2-0) vs. Iowa State (0-1) Game Preview

One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win

Just how much will the loss of star RB Rodney Anderson mean to the Oklahoma offense?

Kyler Murray is still in place, and there are still plenty of weapons to work behind the great offensive line, but Anderson was special. The Cyclones are only one game in, but the run defense was swarming and aggressive in the loss to Iowa – they’ll provide the best test yet for the Sooner O.

For all of the good things OU has done so far, the D only has one takeaway. Iowa State has to win the turnover margin to pull this off.

One Reason Why Oklahoma Will Win

Does the Kyle Kempt injury matter to the Cyclone offense?

The star of last year’s shocker against the Sooner was knocked out of the Iowa game, and while his knee isn’t as bad as the team thought, he’s not going to be 100%. It might be up to backup Zeb Noland to give it a shot – he connected on 4-of-10 passes against Iowa.

The Iowa State offense only managed 11 first downs last week agains the Hawkeyes and came up with 188 yards of total offense. Oklahoma – even without Anderson – might get that in the first quarter if everything goes well.

Kyler Murray is humming. He has one pick, but he’s been efficient, he’s been effective, and he hasn’t even turned his running skills loose.

Prediction & Line

Oklahoma 40, Iowa State 17
Line: Oklahoma -17.5, o/u: 57.5

Georgia (2-0) vs. Middle Tennessee (1-1) Game Preview

One Reason Why Georgia Will Win

The Bulldogs took care of business … yawn.

It was a crazy atmosphere at South Carolina, the Gamecock team is and was good enough to come up with a big performance, and the Bulldogs left town with a 41-17 win.

That’s what national championship-level teams are supposed to do.

Without much of a pass rush so far, the pass defense has been fantastic so far, and it’s been great at getting off the field in a hurry. Against Austin Peay and South Carolina, Georgia has allowed just 26 first downs – almost half as many as the Bulldog offense is generating.

So far, the Middle Tennessee offensive line is having a problem, and the secondary hasn’t been good. The Bulldogs are about to beat up the Blue Raiders on the lines, and Jake Fromm will throw at will, but …

One Reason Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Blue Raiders have a pass rush.

Granted, they did most of their work against UT Martin, but they were able to generate plays in the backfield last week need to sell out to get to Fromm and Justin Fields.

The passing game ability is there – it just didn’t rock against Vanderbilt.

Brent Stockstill is still hitting 70% of his passes with 585 yards with six interceptions and a pick, and he’s got the experience and the receiving corps to push around the Georgia secondary a little bit if the Dawgs aren’t fully focused.

It’s sandwich game time. The South Carolina game was the big statement moment, and a trip to Mizzou is coming up next. The Blue Raiders have to hope for the letdown.

Prediction & Line

Georgia 44, Middle Tennessee 13
Line: Georgia -31.5, o/u: COMING

Clemson (2-0) vs Georgia Southern (2-0) Game Preview

One Reason Why Georgia Southern Will Win

It’s possible Clemson’s mind isn’t fully focused on the task at hand.

There’s the little issue of the hurricane – which doesn’t look like it’s going to affect the area too much, but will be home to a whole slew of people fleeing the coastline.

The Tigers are also coming off the emotional fight against Texas A&M, and they have the ACC opener against Georgia Tech to follow.

Granted, the two games were against South Carolina State and UMass, but but the Eagle running game has been terrific, cranking up more than 300 yards in both games and averaging close to six yards per carry.

With this type of attack, there’s always the off chance that the opposing defense just can’t hit the curveball on the right day.

It seems like a million years ago now, but Georgia Southern is the program that hit Alabama’s national championship defense for 302 yards back in 2011 – only two other teams hit the 100-yard mark – and ran for 429 yards in a 2013 win over a Florida defense that only gave up more than 200 yards to one other offense.

One Reason Why Clemson Will Win

The amazing Tiger defensive front hasn’t been impenetrable so far, but it hasn’t been all that far off.

Furman and Texas A&M both averaged around 2.2 yards per carry, and the Tigers have yet to allow a rushing touchdown. Georgia Southern is trying to throw the ball a wee bit more, but … no. This is a running team trying to go against an all-timer of a front four.

There’s a chance the Eagle O really, really doesn’t work.

On the other side, the Georgia Southern defensive front doesn’t generate enough pressure. The pass rush hasn’t done much, and there isn’t a whole lot of movement in the backfield. It’s been all good – the run defense has been terrific so far – but give Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence time, and they’ll carve up the Eagle secondary.

Prediction & Line
