How to watch Oregon vs San Jose State
Date: Saturday, September 15
Game Time: 5:00 ET
Venue: Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR
Network: Pac-12 Network
It doesn’t look like a fair fight on paper. The Ducks can strike by land or air. UO quarterback Justin Herbert has passed for 531 yards and nine touchdowns and been intercepted just twice. Receiver Jaylon Redd averages 23.4 yards per catch. Tony Brooks-James starts, but six UO running backs have carried. CJ Verdell leads the team with an average of 78.5 yards per game. San Jose State is 124th nationally in team defense, and 127th in passing defense. There are 130 FBS schools.
The Spartans are unsettled at quarterback. Josh Love started against UC Davis. Montel Aaron got the call against Washington State. Michael Carrillo played in both games. It didn’t matter who at the throttle against Washington State, which clubbed San Jose State 31-0. The Spartans are 123rd nationally in rushing offense, and will be trying to operate against a UO defense that holds opponents to 2.2 yards per rush. Justin Hollins (3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks) and Jalen Jelks (2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks) have been play-makers for the Ducks. Cristobal said linebacker La’Mar Winston, injured against Bowling Green in Oregon’s opener, has been cleared to play.
One Reason Why San Jose State Will Win
For all of the problems the Spartans are having this season, they’re able to force takeaways with four so far – all interceptions – and the defense has been surprisingly good on third downs.
The offense has just enough to push the passing game a bit more after a rough day against Washington State. Montel Aaron threw for 254 yards and two scores against UC Davis.
Tyler Nevens needs the ball more and a little room, but get him going and he can give the Spartans a running game. Oregon’s defense has yet to be tested by anyone who can do much on the ground. SJSU has to at least give it a try.
One Reason Why Oregon Will Win
Yeah, San Jose State is able to pick off a few passes, but that’s after getting roasted by big passing games.
Playing Washington State hasn’t helped, but so far the Spartans were destroyed by UC Davis for 446 yards and against the Cougars for 420. Get Justin Herbert going early, and that’s it – San Jose State won’t be able to do much to keep up. If it does, just start throwing again and all will be fine.
There’s no Spartan running game to speak of so far – the offense has to try throwing to keep up. Throw in the problems with penalties and the lack of offensive punch in general, and the Ducks should have this with just a few drives.
